Regulation of the Academic Advisor

Academic Advisor System

In accordance with the decision of the Senate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (No. 78656/23.06.2023) on the “Approval of the Regulations of Postgraduate Study Programmes of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)” (Government Gazette 4084/B/23.06.2023), the following provisions apply:

Upon enrolment in the MSc Programme, each postgraduate student is assigned a permanent faculty member of the Programme as an Academic Advisor.

The role of the Academic Advisor is to monitor the student’s academic progress and to be informed by teaching staff of any repeated absences of the students under their supervision. Students are accordingly notified (via the Secretariat) that such absences may result in failure in the respective course.

In addition, the Academic Advisor provides guidance regarding the selection of the Master’s thesis topic, taking into account the student’s research interests. Postgraduate students are expected to maintain regular communication with their Academic Advisor regarding any issue that may affect the smooth progression of their studies.

The Academic Advisor offers the necessary academic guidance and support to help students meet the requirements of the MSc Programme.

Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Advisors are expected to meet regularly with their assigned postgraduate students, at least twice per semester. Their responsibilities include, among others:

  • identifying students’ needs and research interests, supporting their strengths and skills, and encouraging them to pursue areas that best match their profile
  • providing information and facilitating students’ interaction with the governing bodies of the MSc Programme and administrative services
  • assisting in the development of the student’s individual semester study plan and in defining the topic of the Master’s thesis
  • identifying students with a high number of outstanding course requirements
  • developing appropriate support plans for such students

Institutional Support

Teaching staff, administrative staff, and the relevant services of the University cooperate with and support Academic Advisors in their role. They also take into consideration the Advisors’ feedback, observations, recommendations, and requests regarding any deficiencies or operational issues affecting students, as well as proposals for their resolution.
