PROCEDURES AND CRITERIA
FOR TEACHING STAFF SELECTION
The School of Medicine adopts and follows clear, transparent, and merit-based procedures for the selection of personnel with the appropriate qualifications, while providing employment conditions that respect the importance of teaching and research, as defined by relevant legislation. The process for the election/promotion of personnel aims exclusively at:
- Safeguarding the prestige of the Department.
- The continuous improvement of the Department’s educational and research output.
- The continuous enhancement of the Department’s standing at both national and international levels.
During the selection and promotion of personnel, the current legislation and the relevant regulatory decisions of the Senate are observed. All members of the teaching staff possess, at minimum, the necessary teaching skills. Compliance with this requirement is ensured by procedures provided by legislation for their announcement and recruitment/appointment under **Law 4957/2022**, which establishes the procedures and conditions for election to a new faculty position (DEP). New positions are announced according to Articles 138, 139, and 141 of Law 4957/2022, and candidates must meet specific criteria (including teaching) as stated in Article 143.
Additionally, the evaluation for the election of a new faculty member is based on the candidate’s overall teaching and research work and includes an assessment of their teaching ability. Candidates who meet the legal qualifications are invited by the Head of the Department to deliver a scientific lecture on a topic related to the field of the position before the Electoral Body and the academic community, including interested students (Article 147, par. 7). The School of Medicine has compiled a **Register of Members**, as provided by Law 4957/2022, which is posted on the **APELLA** portal.
Assignment of Teaching Work in Postgraduate Programs (MSc)
The teaching work of the Postgraduate Programs (MSc) is assigned following a decision by the competent MSc body (Department Assembly or Program Committee). This is based on a recommendation from the MSc Coordinating Committee or the MSc Director. Teaching work includes:
- Autonomous teaching of compulsory and elective courses.
- Conducting laboratories and laboratory exercises.
- Clinical work for student instruction and clinical exercises.
- Supervision and coordination of student internships.
- Supervision of term papers or dissertations.
- Organization and conduct of seminars/conferences or other advanced educational activities.
Teaching Staff Categories
Teaching staff for the MSc may be drawn from:
- Members of the DEP, EEP, EDIP, and ETEP of the Department or other Departments of the same or another Higher Education Institution (HEI), provided additional employment terms are met if the MSc has tuition fees.
- Emeritus Professors or retired faculty members.
- Collaborating professors and adjunct lecturers.
- Visiting professors or visiting researchers.
- Researchers and specialized scientists from research and technological bodies (Article 13A, Law 4310/2014) or other research centers in Greece or abroad.
- Scientists of recognized standing with specialized knowledge and relevant experience in the scientific field of the MSc.
In any case, a fundamental prerequisite for the submission and evaluation of a candidacy remains the criteria provided by the current legislation, according to which the candidate’s overall scientific work is judged, namely their teaching, research, clinical/laboratory work, as well as their academic ethics.
The following table lists the categories of criteria that are taken into positive account by the members of the electoral body and are considered alongside the candidate’s overall CV, always ensuring they meet the formal provisions of the current legislation.

Procedures and Criteria for Teaching Staff Selection
The MSc organizes and follows clear, transparent, and fair procedures for selecting qualified teaching staff and provides employment conditions that respect the importance of teaching and research. The staff consists of approved DEP members of the AUTh School of Medicine, as well as EEP, EDIP, and ETEP members, and PhD-holding scientific collaborators. Selection is based on CVs, research experience, impact factors, participation in international conferences, and performance in research and teaching, utilizing international systems such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed.
Practices for Attracting High-Level Academic Personnel
The MSc ensures a healthy academic environment for high-level staff. Lectures are conducted by internationally renowned scientists and researchers from abroad specializing in cardiovascular and respiratory applied physiology. The workload includes lectures, seminars, interactive teaching, and lab exercises, all detailed in the MODIP information system (M1 forms). Faculty members fulfill their undergraduate obligations independently of their MSc contributions.
Student Evaluation and Staff Development Strategy
Following HAHE (ADIP) guidelines, students evaluate courses anonymously via the electronic MODIP system. Each instructor has access to their personal results to aid professional development. The Internal Evaluation Group (OMEA) oversees the process. The MSc encourages mobility and training
