Participants and Admission

The maximum number of students admitted each year is limited to fifteen (15) postgraduate students. The program cannot be conducted with fewer than eight (8) postgraduate students. The program, as decided by the Department Assembly, announces available positions through an open application process. This announcement includes the admission requirements, the number of available spots, candidate categories, the admission procedure, selection criteria, application deadlines, and the required documentation. The admission announcement is published on the Department’s website. Applications, along with the necessary documentation, must be submitted to the Department’s Secretariat, either in printed or electronic form. The selection criteria for admitted students are as follows:
  1. Possession of a bachelor’s degree/diploma from a recognized domestic or foreign higher education institution.
  2. Detailed academic transcripts for undergraduate courses relevant to the program.
A well-structured research proposal of 1500-2000 words, outlining the student’s research interests, bibliographic knowledge, and ability to develop a scientific study plan.
  1. A complete CV, including a portfolio of any published studies or other works by the candidate.
  2. Proficiency in English, as a mandatory requirement, at a level determined by the Department Assembly. The program accepts candidates with the following levels of foreign language proficiency: a certificate of good (B2 level), very good (C1 level), or excellent (C2 level) knowledge of English, according to the Council of Europe’s system, which is recognized by the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP). Alternatively, a degree or postgraduate diploma from a Greek university or an equivalent foreign university, demonstrating successful completion of an English-language undergraduate or postgraduate program, may be submitted.
  3. An interview will be conducted by a three-member Graduate Student Selection Committee (EEMF), appointed by the Department Assembly. This committee will consist of faculty members involved in the postgraduate program and may include members from the Master’s Program, steering committee as well.
In addition to the required documents, applicants may submit, if available: a. A diploma or diplomas from postgraduate studies at a Greek university or an equivalent foreign institution. b. A doctoral degree from a Greek university or an equivalent foreign institution. c. Certificates demonstrating proficiency in French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Russian. If the applicant is a foreign national, certificates of Greek language proficiency may also be submitted. d. Documentation of any research and publication activities, participation in student mobility programs, and relevant professional experience. The above documents can be submitted either as certified copies or simple photocopies. Foreign applicants must provide a certificate of Greek language proficiency at least at the B2 level as a prerequisite for admission. The evaluation method (scoring) of the above criteria falls under the jurisdiction of the Department Assembly and will be detailed later. The selection process, as decided by the Department Assembly, is conducted by the Graduate Student Selection Committee (EEMF) as mentioned above. The Committee prepares a complete list of all applicants, rejects those who do not meet the minimum criteria set by the Department, and invites the shortlisted candidates who meet the prerequisites for an interview, where applicable. After the process, which includes a written examination and evaluation based on the submitted documentation and interview, a final list of successful candidates is compiled. Written Examination
  1. Candidates will be assessed through a written examination on the topic of “Political History”, based on the indicative bibliography provided in the call.
  2. The Department Assembly appoints a three-member Graduate Student Selection Committee (EEMF), which may include members from the Steering Committee (SC) of the postgraduate program.
  3. All written exams are evaluated and graded by two faculty members of the EEMF, while the third member serves as the re-grader. As previously mentioned, the Department Assembly appoints the members of the EEMF. Grading follows a scale from one (1) to ten (10), with five (5) being the passing grade.
  4. In its meeting, the EEMF sums up the scores of each exam and calculates the average grade. If there is a discrepancy of more than three points between the two evaluators’ scores, the exam is re-graded. In such cases, the re-grader’s score is considered the final average. Afterward, the candidates’ names are announced, and the committee prepares the score list of all examinees and the specific list of successful candidates.
  5. Candidates are considered successful in the written examination if they have obtained an aggregate score of at least five (5) (the average of the two evaluators’ scores must be equal to or greater than 5 on a scale of 0-10).
  6. The results are announced by the Secretariat and include a detailed breakdown of each candidate’s scores and the final total score.
Personal Interview Candidates who pass the written examinations will proceed to a personal interview before the three-member Graduate Student Selection Committee (EEMF). The interview primarily focuses on the candidate’s submitted research proposal and any publications. The interview is graded by all present committee members on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being excellent and 5 being the passing grade. The average score for each candidate is then calculated. Candidates are considered successful in the interview if they achieve an average score of at least 5. For candidates who are successful in both the written examination and the interview, the final ranking score is calculated as follows:
  • 10% from the undergraduate degree grade [rounded to one decimal place, provided it is above 6.5],
  • 10% from language proficiency [6.5 for very good, 8.5 for excellent, 10 for two or more languages],
  • 60% from the performance in the written exams [30x the grade given by Examiner A and 30x the grade given by Examiner B],
  • 20% from the evaluation of the research proposal during the oral interview [20x the average score of the EEMF members].
Additional qualifications, for which documentation may be submitted, are considered during the interview but do not contribute to the scoring. If any positions remain unfilled, they may be filled either by ranking the candidates in descending order of total score or by issuing a supplementary call for applications until the prescribed number of admitted students is met. The final list of successful candidates and any alternates, once validated by the Department Assembly, will be posted on the notice board of the Secretariat and on the Department’s website. Appeals against the results may be submitted within five (5) working days from the announcement of the results. Successful candidates should enroll within seven (7) days of the related announcement by the program’s Secretariat, submitting any required documentation. If a candidate does not enroll within the specified timeframe, it will be considered a refusal to accept the position, and the spot will be offered to the next successful candidate.
