The academic year begins on 1 September and ends on 31 August of the following calendar year.
The educational work of each academic year is divided into two semesters, the winter and spring semesters, each of which comprises 13 weeks of teaching and two or three weeks of examinations.
The winter semester begins in the last week of September and ends at the beginning of the last ten days of January. This is followed by the first examination period of the winter semester.
The spring semester begins in mid-February and ends at the end of May. This is followed by the first examination period of the spring semester.
The exact dates are determined by the university senate. In exceptional cases, however, the Minister of Education shall, on a proposal from the Senate, arrange for the two semesters to begin and end outside the normal dates in order to complete the necessary number of teaching weeks.
Each semester has two examination periods:
Courses in the winter semester are examined during the January-February period and repeated during the September period.
Spring semester courses are examined during the June term and repeated during the September term.
The January-February and September examination periods are three weeks long, while the June examination period is legally two weeks long, but all of them are usually extended over a longer period.
Each semester, before the beginning of the examination period, students have the right and the obligation to evaluate their courses and lecturers, with the aim of improving the quality of their studies.
