Academic Calendar
The academic year begins on September 1st and ends on August 31st of the following calendar year.
The educational activities of each academic year are divided into two semesters, the winter semester and the spring semester, each consisting of 13 weeks of teaching and two or three weeks of examinations.
-
The winter semester begins in the last week of September and ends in the early part of the last ten-day period of January, followed by the first examination period of the winter semester.
-
The spring semester begins in mid-February and ends at the end of May, followed by the first examination period of the spring semester.
The exact dates are determined by the University Senate. In exceptional cases, the Minister of Education, upon proposal of the Senate, may regulate the start and end dates of the two semesters outside the regular schedule, in order to ensure completion of the required number of teaching weeks.
Each semester includes two examination periods:
-
Courses of the winter semester are examined in January–February, with repeat examinations held in September.
-
Courses of the spring semester are examined in June, with repeat examinations also held in September.
The January–February and September examination periods last three weeks, while the June examination period, by law, lasts two weeks—although in practice all examination periods are usually extended over a longer duration.
Prior to the beginning of each examination period, students are entitled and required to evaluate their courses and instructors, with the aim of improving the quality of their studies. Further information is available on the website of the Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP-AUTh: http://qa.auth.gr) as well as on the website of their School/Department.
