The Department of Pharmacy of the Faculty of Health Sciences (AUTh) organizes the MSc programme: “Pharmaceutical Technology”.
The subject of the MSc programme is the study of pharmaceutical principles and analytical methods that promote the development of Pharmaceutical Technology and Analysis.
In summary, the MSc programme includes the following:
- Drug preformulation studies on solubility, lipophilicity, thermal and crystallographic properties.
- Development and applications of solid dispersions, self-emulsifying systems (SEDDS), nanocrystals and electrospinning in the formulation of drugs as well as the application of microneedles of self-dissolving materials for transdermal/parenteral administration.
- Study of tableting performance by compression and 3D printing.
- Basic principles for the preparation and submission of a pharmaceutical dossier (type II) for the authorization and approval of a pharmaceutical product.
- Collection, recording, processing and analysis of data with PC. Statistical experimental design and multivariate analysis of with established techniques (e.g., PLSR and Artificial Neural Networks).
- Studies of vibrational spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction, porosimetry, surface characterization as well as development of chromatographic methods for the determination of active substances in formulations and biological fluids.
- Natural processes and processing technology applied to the various plant materials.
- Processing of plant materials and formulation into final pharmaceutical products.
- Quality control of raw materials and finished products.
- Cosmetic preparations of natural products and liquid soaps.
The purpose of the MSc programme is to provide knowledge in order to expand and deepen the scientific background in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology and specifically in the preformulation, development and production of pharmaceuticals, natural, biological and cosmetic products as well as their quality control.
Graduates of this programme acquire up-to-date scientific knowledge and experience to actively contribute to research for the development of innovative pharmaceutical dosage forms to combat administration problems of poorly soluble, non-absorbable drugs. Also, they can deal with finding more economical and effective methods of production and control of pharmaceutical products, investigating the reduction of the cost of production and distribution of medicine to the patient, as well as the utilization of Greek natural and biological products.
The programme is offered in the Greek language and the minimum duration of study is defined as three (3) semesters (90 ECTS) with the possibility of a justified extension of up to two (2) additional semesters.
For students who so wish, there is also the possibility, upon request, of attending the programme on a part–time basis.
