University academic calendar (undergraduate studies)

The academic year begins on September 1st and ends on August 31st of the following calendar year. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, the winter and the spring, each consisting of 13 weeks of classes and two or three weeks of exams.

The winter semester starts in the first week of October and concludes in early January. The first examination period of the winter semester follows.

The spring semester starts in mid-February and concludes in late May. The first examination period of the spring semester follows.

The exact dates are determined by the University Senate. In exceptional cases, the Minister of Education, based on the university senate’s proposal, may adjust the start and end dates of the two semesters, outside the normal schedule, to ensure the necessary number of teaching weeks.

Each semester has two examination periods:

  1. Winter semester courses are examined in January-February and, repetitively, in September.
  2. Spring semester courses are examined in June and, repetitively, in September.

The examination periods in January-February and September last for three weeks, while the June period, according to the law, lasts for two weeks, but usually extends over a longer period.

Before the start of each examination period, students have the right and obligation to evaluate the courses and instructors to improve the quality of their studies. More information is available on the Quality Assurance Unit’s website (MODIP-AUTH http://qa.auth.gr) and on the website of their School/Department.
